Then:

"Grandma, why are you saving those bits of twine and pieces of used foil? You can just go to the store and buy new stuff."

"Grandson, I grew up during the Depression"

Now:
"Dad, why are you collecting all those DVDs and saving files to disk and all that? You can just go to the Internet and find that."

"Kids, I grew up during the Great Ensh*ttification..."

I'm liking the informal writing style of the Raspberry Pi RP2350 data sheet:

"I2C is an ubiquitous serial bus first described in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and later used by Philips Semiconductor."

"Although not designed for computation, PIO is quite likely Turing-complete, provided a long enough piece of tape can be found. It is conjectured that it could run DOOM, given a sufficiently high clock speed."

For example, the term "dark patterns" lumps together really sneaky tactics with blunt acts of fraud. When you click an "opt out of cookies" button and get a screen that says "Success!" but which has a tiny little "confirm" button on it that you have to click to *actually* opt out, that's not a "dark pattern," it's just a scam:

American white supremacists inspired the nazis. Keep this in mind at all times.

In 2023, typical CEO pay at S&P 500 companies hit $17.7 million.

The average CEO-to-worker pay ratio was 268-to-1.

It would take more than five lifetimes for workers to earn what CEOs receive in just one year.

Trickle-down economics was always a sham.

"The temporary foreign worker program is an example of the state serving as a tool for the interests of capital.

Industry doesn't want to pay a fair market rate for labour, so they use the state to suppress wages by importing workers to fill jobs.

It's that simple.

Capitalists don't believe in the "free market" that they try to convince you exists. They believe in a rigged system that favours industry, especially big capital, at the cost of labour. "

@mos_8502 @kramse @brouhaha It would be greatly appreciated if there was a detent or some sort of friction to prevent accidental customization and an undo or reset to back out of changes. I want a consistent and predictable and obvious UI - Apple's desktop UI once excelled at this - not the random metastasizing mobile sludge produced by modern undisciplined UX devs and their attendant brainworms.

@brouhaha But what really bugs me is that Linux is copying the bad parts of macOS - the App Store, with all this flatpak and docker and snap bullshit. Package management was already fine with apt.

Six years ago I begged journalists to "stop being loudspeakers for liars" -- and I have to admit that my entreaties fell on deaf ears.

Last week's lie-filled "press conference" at Trump's home was a powerful demonstration of why they should at least try. But they've made it clear that they will never even acknowledge this fundamental flaw in what they do, much less do anything to repair the ongoing damage.

Fedi meta, false accusations

Woke up in UTC+1 to discover that my instance has been blocked by tech.lgbt [ETA: and then unblocked? I feel crazy]

Am hearing it's because we're accused of antisemitism.

I'm a "wrong-half" American Ashkenazi Jew (four patrilineal great-grandparents lived in "rootless cosmopolitan" Bialystok).

I reject the idea that murder by Israelis must be supported by all Jews, or that opposing this murder is somehow a condemnation of Judaism.

Really hate to see Harris endorsing a terrible Trump tax proposal. Pure pandering -- no panacea for workers in a crappy system, and bad for America's economic health.
