How come Access Control Lists haven’t supplanted Unix permissions yet?

@mos_8502 I'm guessing it's a mix of good enough and commands for managing ACLs can be a pain to use (same could be said with Windows ACL command line tools)

@mos_8502 @qlp Also, the last time I looked, the documentation was crap, and if you didn't know how ACLs kinda worked to begin with it was hard to get a clue. That was 8+ years ago, and may be much better by now.

@mhkohne @mos_8502 Exactly. It's even more of a PITA when you're dealing with Samba and people managing those ACLs in both UNIX and Windows. Oof!

@qlp @mhkohne @mos_8502
And even moreso if you also use NFS.
SMB ACLs ≠ NFS ACLs ≠ Linux ACLs.

@brouhaha @qlp @mhkohne Does anyone still use NFS? I never hear about it anymore.

Follow

@mos_8502 @brouhaha @qlp @mhkohne I use it all the time also. It is what you do if you have more than one computer for various functions. Got rid of Windows, so no more Samba.
